There are these couplets of magical lyrics in FOREVER REIGN that capture my heart everytime that I hear or sing the song. So, I want to take them apart and examine them over the next few blogs and dive deep into their meanings and riches.
YOU ARE GOOD, YOU ARE GOOD
We all know that God is good (all the time..go ahead and say it… and all the time…God is good) but what does that mean in our lives? Does that mean that just because God isn’t full of the stuff we call sin and junk in our lives that this is the only reason he is good? I think it’s more than that.
I think when we say God is good we don’t go far enough. I think we should say GOD IS GOOD because that’s who he is. He doesn’t qualify by what he doesn’t do–his nature is good, and so therefore everything that he does is good. I think that’s better theology. Quantifying it the other way sets us up to think that should God ever fail, then he’ll cease to be good (which we know He will never fail). This way, acknowledging that at his essence and core is Good–then we can see a part of God and understand that anything good in our lives comes as a gift from him.
Certainly, our outward activites and achievements don’t qualify us to be good in God’s eyes. We will never achieve “GOODNESS” and that’s what I think is wonderful about the second part of the songs. THERE IS NOTHING GOOD IN ME.
There, I said it. We are all full of failure, pity, misery , sin, lust, greed, hate, envy, strife. I could go on and on, but all we have to do is look in the mirror to see that this is true. There is no good in me (Romans 7:18) except that which comes by the hand and the grace of a loving savior who imparts His goodness to me as He lives and breathes in me.
This song is a declaration that GOD IS GOOD…and I fail to live up to that goodness but because of Christ I can see the goodness of God. (Ps. 27:13-14)
13 I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD
In the land of the living.
14 Wait for the LORD;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the LORD.
So what songs are you taking apart to learn from and to study?
